Physical Activity Patterns and Quality of Life Among Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Population aging has intensified the need to identify modifiable factors influencing the quality of life (QoL) of older adults. The importance of physical activity in determining one's physical, psychological, and social well-being in later life is well acknowledged. A cross-sectional study was employed. The sample comprised 240 community-dwelling older adults (60-75 years). Physical activity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire–Short Form, and quality of life was assessed using the WHOQOL-BREF. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation, independent t-tests, and effect sizes (Cohen’s d) were used for analysis. Physical activity was positively associated with overall quality of life (r = 0.48, p < 0.01). Physically active older adults reported significantly higher physical health, psychological well-being, and social relationship scores than inactive participants (p < 0.05), with large effect sizes (d = 0.94–1.12). The environmental domain showed a small, non-significant effect (d = 0.21). There were no discernible gender differences observed in the relationship between physical activity and quality of life. The results emphasize the importance of encouraging regular exercise to improve the quality of life for older individuals and promote healthy aging.
