Funding Agencies Backing Paralympians: Global and Indian Perspectives
Author(s): Sunny K
Abstract:The Paralympic Movement has grown significantly over the past few decades, providing athletes with disabilities an international platform to showcase sporting excellence. However, participation and performance at elite levels demand substantial financial, infrastructural, and institutional support. The present paper examines the role of funding agencies backing Paralympians at international and national levels, with special reference to India. The study reviews the historical evolution of the Paralympic Games, identifies major global funding organizations, and analyzes government, private, and non-governmental funding mechanisms supporting Paralympic athletes. Particular emphasis is placed on Indian initiatives such as the Paralympic Committee of India, Sports Authority of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and corporate social responsibility programs. The findings highlight that sustained funding, structured athlete assistance programs, and public–private partnerships are crucial for enhancing Paralympic performance and inclusion. The paper concludes that strengthening funding frameworks is essential for achieving equity, excellence, and long-term development in Paralympic sports.
