Author(s): Sachin K and Randeep Rakwal
Abstract:India is on the cusp of making history in the realm of sports. India is selected as the host of the Commonwealth Games 2030, the centenary year of organizing the games. At the same time, India is making all efforts to get the hosting rights for 2036 (Olympic and Paralympic Games) as well. Hosting these prestigious games present India with a unique opportunity to showcase (to the world) its sporting capabilities. Though India is witnessing a strong performance the past decade, in its Olympic journey, it has faced more disappointment than success. The next decade is crucial for the country, not only in terms of gearing up to host global mega-events but to demonstrate its sporting potential to the world. Despite all the efforts by the stakeholders of sports in the country, like the Government of India through SAI, IOA & NSFs, state governments, and the private sector, including NGOs, the outcome falls short of the expectations in the most populous country on the globe. The viewpoint article intends to think on the above aspects and propose a sustainable sports science and medicine model for India in its endeavour to become a global power in sports. In the process, the concept of excellence in sports is being defined. This opinion presented by the authors also examines the current scenario of the Indian sports ecosystem, the efforts made by the stakeholders towards achieving excellence in sports.
