Abstract:
Physical education and sports psychology are interconnected disciplines that contribute to the holistic development of athletes by combining physical training with psychological preparation. This study aimed to investigate and compare aggression, team cohesion, and achievement motivation in male football and volleyball players at the university level. A descriptive comparative survey design was employed for this purpose. The sample consisted of 30 male players (15 footballers and 15 volleyball players) aged 18-25 years, selected through purposive sampling from ICFAI University, Tripura. Standardised psychological tools were used for data collection: the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) to measure aggression, the Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ) to assess team cohesion, and the Sports Achievement Motivation Test (SAMT), developed by Dr M. L. Kamlesh, to evaluate achievement motivation in this study. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent samples t-tests at a 0.05 significance level. The results revealed that football players exhibited significantly higher levels of aggression compared to volleyball players. Although football players also showed higher average scores in team cohesion and achievement motivation, these differences were not statistically significant. Volleyball players displayed greater variability in cohesion and motivation scores, indicating less uniform psychological characteristics within that group. The findings suggest that the nature of the sport influences certain psychological traits, particularly aggression. This information can assist coaches and sports psychologists in designing sport-specific psychological training programs to enhance performance and promote positive behaviours among university athletes.
