Sports injuries prevention, rehabilitation, and psychological impact on athletes

Author(s): Yousuf Ali

Abstract:
Sports injuries represent a significant challenge to athlete health and performance, encompassing not only physical damage but also profound psychological consequences. This study investigates the prevention, rehabilitation, and psychological dimensions of sports injuries among 50 athletes across multiple disciplines using primary data. Results revealed that ligament tears and strains were the most common injuries, primarily caused by overuse and collision. Rehabilitation practices showed that physiotherapy and psychological counseling were rated most effective, while motivation and adherence declined over prolonged recovery durations. Psychological assessment indicated that fear of reinjury, anxiety, and frustration were the dominant stressors, with family and teammate support serving as the most beneficial emotional resources. Correlation analysis revealed a strong positive relationship between injury severity and stress (r = 0.72) and a negative correlation between motivation and stress (r = -0.66), highlighting motivation’s protective role in recovery. Regression results confirmed that injury severity, rehabilitation duration, and motivation together accounted for 64% of the variance in stress, underscoring the interplay between physical and psychological factors. The study concludes that a holistic, multidisciplinary rehabilitation model integrating physical therapy, mental health support, and preventive education is crucial to enhance athlete recovery, minimize reinjury risk, and promote long-term psychological resilience in competitive sport environments.
