An analysis of students perceptions toward physical education as an academic subject

Author(s): Shubham Singh

Abstract:

This study titled An Analysis of Students Perceptions toward Physical Education as an Academic Subject explores how students perceive physical education (PE) in relation to its academic importance, participation, and overall impact on student development. The research aims to assess students attitudes toward PE, identify the factors influencing their perceptions, and evaluate how these perceptions affect participation, performance, and interest. A quantitative research design was employed, utilizing a structured 15-item questionnaire distributed to 190 respondents across schools, colleges, and training institutions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, regression analysis, and ANOVA to determine significant relationships between variables. Results indicated that factors such as teaching methods, curriculum content, peer influence, and perceived educational value significantly shape students perceptions of PE. Positive attitudes were found to enhance motivation, participation, and academic engagement, whereas limited institutional emphasis and lack of awareness reduced its perceived importance. The study concludes that promoting quality physical education through improved teaching, inclusive curriculum design, and professional teacher development can elevate its academic status, fostering both physical and intellectual growth among students.
