Abstract:The present study aimed to develop and validate the Patanjali Ashtanga Yoga Adherence Questionnaire (PAYAQ), a culturally grounded psychometric tool designed to assess adherence to the Bahiranga components of Patanjalis Ashtanga Yoga. The instrument was developed through a multi-phase process including literature review, focus group exploration, expert consultation, pilot testing, and large-scale validation. An initial pool of 58 items was generated, refined to 52 items for Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), and further reduced to 28 items for Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). EFA revealed a multidimensional structure, and CFA supported a six-factor model representing Physiological Self-Regulation, Cognitive-Emotional Awareness, Psychological Resilience, Pro-social Ethical Conduct, Non-violent Self-Regulation, and Self-Acceptance & Contentment. Reliability indices were strong across factors (ω = 0.606
-0.873; total scale ω = 0.912), demonstrating consistent measurement properties. Although certain CFA indices fell below optimal thresholds, all factor loadings were significant and aligned with theoretical expectations, supporting the models validity. The PAYAQ provides a comprehensive and contextually relevant instrument for evaluating adherence to Ashtanga Yoga practices among student-athletes and young adults. It offers valuable utility for yoga-based interventions, educational assessments, and research exploring the behavioral and ethical dimensions of yogic practice.
