Author(s): Kuntal Thakur
Abstract:Introduction: Yoga is not just a physical practice. It is a holistic path based on ethical, philosophical, and spiritual values. As yoga becomes more popular around the world, the importance of ethics in yoga education has grown. This is crucial for maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the practice.
Purpose: This study looks at the ethical foundations of yoga, focusing on the Yamas and Niyamas found in Patanjalis Yoga Sutras. It examines their relevance and use in modern yoga education. The research aims to highlight the responsibilities of teachers in creating a safe, inclusive, and ethically sound environment.
Methodology: A qualitative and interpretative approach was taken. This combined analysis of classical texts (such as the Yoga Sutras and Bhagavad Gītā) with insights from current teaching methods and applied ethics literature. Contemporary case studies and academic references support the analysis.
Discussion and Results: The findings show that ethical principles like ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truthfulness), and svadhyaya (self-study) are vital for building trust, inclusivity, and thoughtful teaching. The study addresses issues like cultural appropriation, exploitation, and mental health. It emphasizes the need for ethical knowledge among yoga educators.
Conclusion: Incorporating ethics into yoga education is essential. Maintaining ethical standards ensures physical safety and supports emotional and spiritual growth, reaffirming yoga as a meaningful, value-driven practice.
