The process of questionnaire construction: A narrative synthesis of psychometric procedures
Author(s): Dipendra Singh and Mahendra Kumar Singh
Abstract:This work presents a narrative synthesis of the comprehensive, multi-phase methodology required for developing a reliable and valid psychometric questionnaire, concentrating on tools designed to assess latent organizational characteristics like job satisfaction. Scale development is a methodical process that commences with Theoretical Conceptualization, utilizing both deductive and inductive approaches to create a comprehensive item pool grounded in a specified dimensionality (global or facet-based). This is succeeded by stringent Content Validation, employing expert panels to compute indices such as the I-CVI to enhance item quality and assess clarity. The structural integrity is empirically verified during the Structural Validation phase, which entails sequential analyses: Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) to reveal the latent structure (informed by Parallel Analysis), followed by Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) on an independent sample to validate the model fit using essential metrics such as $chi^2 / df$, CFI, and RMSEA. The instrument's quality is confirmed by thorough evaluations of Reliability (Cronbach’s $lpha$ or McDonald’s $omega$, test-retest stability) and Construct Validity (convergent, discriminant, and criterion validity). Compliance with this extensive psychometric framework is essential for producing measurement instruments that enhance academic theory and direct efficient organizational practice.
