Abstract:

The doctoral research paper titled "Yoga for Stress Reduction: A comparative study between Virtual Reality Yoga & in person Yoga in providing stress relief and promoting relaxation" This research delves into the comparative efficacy of two distinct modalities, Virtual Reality Yoga (VRY) and in-person Yoga (IPY), in mitigating stress and fostering relaxation. In light of escalating demands for coping mechanisms against stress, yoga has emerged as a widely embraced holistic practice revered for its comprehensive advantages spanning physical, psychological, and emotional wellness. Virtual Reality Yoga represents a contemporary reinterpretation of conventional yoga, offering immersive encounters within digitally crafted environments, whereas in-person Yoga maintains the conventional elements of physical proximity, interpersonal engagement, and tactile sensations.

Employing a mixed-methods approach, this study engaged a cohort of 100 participants aged between 18 and 65, randomly assigned to either the VRY or IPY cohort. Both interventions comprised a series of eight weekly sessions concentrating on stress-alleviating techniques, relaxation methodologies, and mindfulness exercises. Data collection encompassed pre- and post-intervention evaluations utilizing standardized scales such as the Perceived Stress Scale and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, alongside physiological metrics including heart rate variability and cortisol levels. Additionally, qualitative data were harvested through semi-structured interviews to delve into the nuanced subjective encounters and preferences of participants.

The findings illuminated significant reductions in perceived stress levels and state anxiety across both cohorts, with marginally superior improvements noted within the VRY group. Quantitative scrutiny uncovered a marked disparity favoring the VRY cohort concerning mean alterations in stress and anxiety scores. Furthermore, preliminary observations hinted at marginally greater shifts in heart rate variability metrics within the VRY cohort, implying potential benefits inherent in immersive virtual environments.

Qualitative insights underscored the immersive essence of VRY, augmenting participants' sense of immersion and absorption during sessions, while IPY participants accentuated the significance of social interaction and instructor guidance.

In summary, both VRY and IPY emerged as efficacious avenues for stress mitigation and relaxation promotion, each offering distinctive advantages and experiences. The selection between modalities may hinge on individual predilections and accessibility considerations. Future inquiries should delve into longitudinal outcomes and the assimilation of these modalities into mental health and wellness initiatives, thereby enriching the evolving tapestry of stress management interventions.
