Abstract:
This study examines the impact of sports scholarships and coaching on advancing the careers of graduated varsity athletes from Wesleyan University Philippines (WUP). The descriptive analysis of the respondents’ demographic and academic information revealed a dominating male athlete population as well as stratification across certain academic fields, suggesting that there is a need for more comprehensive and inclusive recruiting for the university’s varsity teams. There also exist concerningly high rates of unemployment among graduates with disproportionate access to low-wage employment, which suggests an underdeveloped professional transition readiness in conjunction with insufficient career services. While athletic performance positively influenced the maintenance of sponsorships through sports scholarships at WUP, their overall impact appears limited without sustained institutional support beyond college. Coaching and participating in varsity athletics contributed greatly to developing essential transferable life skills such as leadership, resilience, and time management, underscoring the enduring impact of athletic mentorship. Despite this, student-athletes faced significant academic alongside financial, and emotional challenges, which underscores an urgent need for holistic support frameworks dedicated to athlete health and well-being. The findings suggest that although sports scholarships combined with coaching fundamentally nurture the all-around development of student-athletes, persistent postgraduate difficulties indicate the need for ongoing strategic intervention, specifically support systems tailored to care.
