Abstract:
Background: The North East States of India (NESI) has consistently produced talented athletes despite limited infrastructure, inadequate policies, and poor livelihood support. Given its cultural affinity for sports and significant contributions to national representation, a comprehensive assessment of the sports ecosystem in NESI is critical for its development. Aims: This study aimed to conduct a detailed SWOT analysis of the sports landscape in NESI, evaluating infrastructure, governance, training, and policies to identify gaps and recommend strategies for enhancing sports as a viable livelihood option. Results: Findings highlight critical weaknesses, such as insufficient grassroots infrastructure, lack of certified coaches, inadequate policy implementation, and low awareness of career pathways beyond elite sports. However, notable strengths include a strong sports culture, natural talent pool, and emerging adventure sports opportunities. The study proposes a three-tier athlete development model, state-specific Centres of Excellence, and professional leagues like the North East Derby League to promote participation and create livelihoods. Conclusion: Addressing infrastructural and policy gaps through strategic interventions, public-private partnerships, and skill development can transform NESI’s sports sector into a sustainable ecosystem that supports careers and fosters regional integration.
