Author(s): Indu Mazumdar and Purnima Chetry
Abstract:Mental toughness is a critical psychological trait that significantly influences athletic performance, especially in high-pressure competitive environments. This study explores the mental toughness levels among female sportspersons across various disciplines, aiming to identify key psychological factors that contribute to their resilience, focus, and competitive success. A sample of 92 female athletes from different sports, including individual and team events, was assessed using a questionnaire. The study examined the influence of variables such as age, level of competition (state, national, international), type of sport, and training background on mental toughness. Results indicate that elite female athletes demonstrate higher levels of mental toughness, particularly in areas of confidence, emotional control, and persistence. The findings underscore the importance of psychological training as a component of athletic development and suggest targeted interventions to enhance mental resilience in emerging female athletes. This study contributes to the growing body of research emphasizing the role of mental toughness in achieving sustained sports performance, especially for women in competitive environments.
