The role of motivation in sports performance: A sports psychology perspective
Author(s): Rajendra Lungatar
Abstract:Motivation is a fundamental construct in sports psychology, influencing an athlete’s persistence, intensity, and performance outcomes. This paper explores the dual-role of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in sports, grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT). A mixed-methods study was conducted involving 40 competitive athletes across multiple sports disciplines. Quantitative findings show that athletes with higher intrinsic motivation demonstrate more consistent performance, greater enjoyment, and lower burnout rates. Qualitative interviews further illuminate how motivational climate and coaching styles affect athletes’ motivation. The paper concludes with practical recommendations for coaches and sports psychologists on how to foster a motivational environment that sustains long-term athlete development and success.
