A comparative study of exercise motivation between adult males and females in Pune

Abstract:This study compared exercise motivation among 90 adults (47 males, 43 females) aged 18-25 in Pune using the Exercise Motivation Inventory-2 (EMI-2), by Markland and Ingledew (1997), comprising 51 items across 14 subscales, was employed to measure motivation levels. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent sample t-tests A. Key findings revealed males (M=3.30, SD=±0.354) scored significantly higher than females (M=3.09, SD=±0.521; p=0.03) in total motivation. Gender differences emerged in six subscales: stress management, revitalization, enjoyment, competition, appearance, and strength/endurance (p<0.05). The findings suggest that gender plays a crucial role in exercise motivation, with males exhibiting higher overall motivation.
