The role of Vinyasa Yoga in supporting the physical and psychological demands of female athletes
Author(s): Victor Paul Raj and T Parasuraman
Abstract:Female athletes face unique physical and psychological demands due to the intensity of structured training, hormonal fluctuations, and performance pressures. This study examines how Vinyasa Yoga improves physical and emotional health in high-intensity female athletes. Dynamic, breath-synchronized Vinyasa Yoga may increase flexibility, joint stability, muscular recovery, and stress reduction. An intervention was undertaken with 18–30-year-old female athletes from diverse sports for 6 weeks. Participants did 30–45 minutes of Vinyasa Yoga three times a week in addition to their athletic training. Flexibility tests, injury incidence tracking, and psychometric evaluations (Perceived Stress Scale, Athlete Burnout Questionnaire) were done pre- and post-intervention. Hamstring and hip flexibility improved significantly (
p<0.05), DOMS complaints decreased, and reported stress and emotional tiredness decreased significantly. The athletes also reported better body awareness and speedier post-training recovery. This study found that adding Vinyasa Yoga to female athletes' training programmes may improve performance and mental health. Yoga-based therapies could be studied for long-term effects and sport-specific adaptations.
