Development in socio-economic factors of sports tourism: A systematic review
Author(s): Hussain Ali, Deepak Sharma and Deepak Kumar Dogra
Abstract:This study explores the socio-economic dimensions of sports tourism through a systematic review of 113 scholarly publications spanning 1983 to 2024. Utilizing a qualitative research approach and the SCOPUS database, the analysis highlights an upward trend in academic engagement with this interdisciplinary field. Early research contributions were minimal and limited, but a significant increase in activity emerged during the 2010s, with a peak in 2021, reflecting growing recognition of sports tourism as a vital area of inquiry. The distribution of articles across a wide range of journals underscores the multi-dimensional nature of the field, encompassing perspectives from economics, and urban development studies. Findings reveal that while much emphasis has been placed on the economic impacts of sports tourism, research on its intangible social effects remains limited. The study calls for a deeper exploration of these underrepresented aspects to advance the theoretical and practical understanding of sports tourism’s role in regional development and socio-economic progress.
