Enhancing serotonin levels through lifestyle interventions: A comprehensive review

Author(s): Jayant Kumar V Ramteke

Abstract:
Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT), a vital neurotransmitter, regulates mood, sleep, appetite, digestion, and cognitive functions. Dysregulation of serotonin is implicated in mood disorders, anxiety, and impaired physiological functions. This review synthesizes evidence-based lifestyle interventions to enhance serotonin levels, naturally promoting mental and physical well-being. Twenty-five non-pharmacological interventions, categorized into physical, psychological, dietary, and environmental strategies, were identified through a systematic literature review. These interventions, including sunlight exposure, exercise, meditation, and mindful eating, are accessible and supported by robust scientific evidence. Integrating multiple interventions into daily routines can synergistically boost serotonin production, offering a practical approach to improving health outcomes.
