The significance of incorporating sports into educational curricula for the comprehensive development of children

Author(s): Yogesh

Abstract:
Engaging in sports and physical activities is crucial for the holistic development of youngsters. This qualitative study investigates the perceived benefits, challenges, and effective ways for integrating sports into school curricula to foster the comprehensive development of children. Interviews were conducted with 15 physical education instructors from various government and private schools in Chandigarh to get their perspectives on the impact of sports participation on students' physical, cognitive, social, and emotional well-being. The results highlight numerous advantages, such as enhanced physical fitness, improved cognitive capabilities, bolstered social-emotional growth, and positive effects on academic performance. Educators also emphasised challenges such as inadequate resources, time constraints, and the need for thorough teacher training. Proposed strategies include improved advocacy, collaborative planning, comprehensive program development, and community partnerships. The findings underscore the critical role of sports in fostering comprehensive child development and the imperative for their extensive integration into school curriculum.
