Physical education and sports: An overview of community engagement in the twenty-first century
Author(s): Srikanta N
Abstract:The prevalent issue of physical inactivity among individuals can be linked to the denial of their essential human right to physical education and engagement in school sports (PES). Growing up without access to the fundamental right of free movement and participation in sports has contributed to a sedentary lifestyle among students. This study aims to investigate the existing knowledge regarding the significance of PES in various aspects of human development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while also highlighting the concerning decline of PES. To enhance the effectiveness of the research, an external desk research method was utilized to collect pertinent information available online, including reports, policies, charters, recommendations, and other relevant articles from diverse electronic databases and websites of international organizations focused on PES, culture, and health. The advantages of PES are examined across all facets of human development, encompassing physical and mental health, cognitive growth, psychosocial well-being, and moral development. Despite its critical role in overall human growth, PES has been marginalized since the late twentieth century. Consequently, there is a growing awareness of PES as a fundamental component of community well-being in the twenty-first century, aimed at transforming PES commitments and policies into tangible actions and practices.
