Author(s): J Dharani and Jeyanthi S
Abstract:This case study highlights the management of 44 years old male patient with a past history of hypertension on regular medication, who had come with pain in the back radiating to the left lower limb. The patient had gradually increased pain over three months, which made him unable to do his daily activities, such as work, and his condition worsened by postures such as sitting, bending, or coughing. Diagnostic imaging showed mild bulges of the discs at L3, L4, and L5, with neurological examination showing nerve root involvement. Initial management was conservative and involved pain relief by means of pelvic traction, cryotherapy, and TENS. Physical therapy was done over a period of six weeks, involving therapeutic exercises, soft tissue mobilization, neural tissue mobilization, and postural corrections. The management also focused on patient education regarding activity modification and correct body mechanics. On completion of his rehabilitation, the patient showed remarkable improvement in regard to pain relief, better functionality, and greater strength.
