Assessing the influence of skill-based drills on physical performance in youth volleyball
Author(s): J Edwin and R Desingurajan
Abstract:Skill-based training plays a crucial role in enhancing physical attributes essential for volleyball performance. This study examines the impact of structured skill-based drills on selected physical variables among school volleyball players. A group of young athletes (N = 60) participated in a controlled training program focusing on fundamental volleyball skills, including passing, serving, spiking, and footwork, integrated with agility, strength, and endurance drills. Pre- and post-training assessments were conducted to evaluate improvements in flexibility (Sit and Reach test), reaction time (Ruler Drop Test) and muscular endurance (Push-Up Test) using standardized tests. Statistical analysis revealed significant enhancements in key physical attributes, suggesting that skill-based training contributes to overall athletic development in youth volleyball players. These findings underscore the importance of integrating sport-specific drills in training regimens to optimize performance and reduce injury risk. Future research may explore long-term adaptations and psychological impacts of skill-based training on young athletes.
