Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and the athletic performance of female athletes in the Saharanpur district.
Methodology: A cross-sectional design was employed, involving 120 female athletes aged 15–22 years from various sports. SES was assessed using a standardized questionnaire covering parental education, occupation, and family income. Athletic performance was evaluated through a composite score combining competitive achievement level (district, state, national) and the Vertical Jump Test. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation, and an independent t-test to compare performance between high and low SES groups.
Findings: Results revealed a significant positive correlation between overall SES and athletic performance ($r =.68, p<.01$). Athletes from higher SES backgrounds exhibited significantly better performance outcomes compared to those from lower SES backgrounds ($t(118) = 8.94, p<.001$). Family income and parental education emerged as strong individual predictors of performance.
Conclusion: Socioeconomic status significantly influences the performance of female athletes in Saharanpur. Lower SES athletes face financial, nutritional, and social barriers that impede optimal performance. Policy measures supporting low-income athletes could enhance equity and talent development.
