Whole body vibration training and myofascial release technique on delayed onset muscle soreness in athletes

Author(s): Rajan Balakrishnan and Selvaraj Sudhakar

Abstract:
The study is to compare the effectiveness of whole body vibration training and myofascial release technique on delayed onset muscle soreness in collegiate athletes.
Introduction: Exercise induced muscle damage leads to ‘Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness’ (DOMS) is a common phenomenon experienced by individuals who perform unaccustomed exercise that typically involves an eccentric component.
Methodology: It is an Experimental study design with a sample size of 60 subjects.
Procedure: A total of 60 subjects were selected & divided into three groups and explained about the study. Group A consist of 20 subjects, Group B consist of 20 subjects and Group C consist of 20 subjects, Both groups were received treatment for one session per day for 4 days. Outcome measures were maximum isometric voluntary contraction (MIVC) for non-dominant elbow flexors using push pull hand held dynamometer. Pain Measurement was measured using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS).
Results: On comparing the Mean values of Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and MIVC score at 96 hours between Group A, Group B & Group C shows that there is a highly significant difference in the Mean values in all three groups. Hence the null hypothesis is rejected.
Conclusion: The study concluded that the whole body vibration training can be used as a first choice of treatment among DOMS induced eccentric type of muscle damage for reduction of pain and improvement in muscle strength.
