Effect of mental imagery training on shot putters

Author(s): Atul R. Patil

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to see the effect of mental imagery training on shot putters of Amravati. For this purposes 20 shot putters were selected from Jilha Stadium Sports Excellence Center, Amravati (Maharashtra) who regularly practice for police bharti at Jilha Stadium Sports Excellence Center, Amravati. Shot putters were selected with the help of simple random sampling method. The age limit of the shot putters was 20 to 25 years. The shot putters were divided into two groups: 20 shot putters as experimental group and 20 shot putters as control groups. At first pre-test were taken on shot put performance of the shot putters. To test the performance of shot put athletes were allowed to take 03 puts or throws from the shot put sectors and the best performance amongst the three performances were recorded. Experimental group were gone through various imagery training as well as regular practice whereas control group were gone through only regular practice. The imagery training was design was schedule for 6 weeks and 5 days a week. After the finish of the imagery training of 6 weeks the athletes were allowed to take 03 puts or throws from the shot put sectors and the best performance amongst the three performances were recorded as the post-test score. To see the effect of mental imagery training on shot put performance of athletes researcher has applied ‘t’ test at 0.05 level of significance. Result of the study shows that on the basis of mean there was difference between the means score of pre-test and post-test of control as well as in experimental group of shot putters in reference to shot put performance. To see these differences is significant or not at 0.05 level of significance, researcher calculated ‘t’ test and result shows that there is significant difference between pre-test and post-test of experimental group as the calculated ‘t’ value 3.348 which was greater than the tabulated ‘t’ value 2.024. Whereas control group players shows insignificant difference as the calculated ‘t’ value 0.682 which was lesser than the tabulated ‘t’ value 2.024. The difference may be attributed that the imagery training is performing the skill in your mind, the mind serves as a rehearsal, or practice, for the real thing. The more you practice the better you perform. Many studies have concluded that visualizing of any activity or skill in your mind can stimulate the physiological response as actually performing that activity, although to a lesser degree. Hence the scholar recommended that imagery training should be adopted by the coaches to train the athletes for improving their skills and performance.
